After a horrible week of weather in Socal of all places!!! I finally had a chance to use my new
400mm f/5.6L. All the shots were taken wide open and I was very impressed with the sharpness. The focusing speed and tracking is like lightening compared to my old 100-400. Let me know what you think of this American Avocet. I was flat in the mud to get this one and I got some stares but I think it was worth it :).

Taken with 1DII
at 1/3200 and f/5.6. ISO:640. With Fill Flash at -1 2/3 ( I think)

I like the pose and eye contact and would put the bird a bit higher in the frame in order to not clip the 'virtual' legs.

Brain,

Very ncie details and pose. Two things i would like to say.

1. Very little room on the bottom and you may be extending the canvas?
2. Mud flats on the top. Solid color is kind of distracting. i would crop that.

Thanks Sid

How do I extend the canvas? Is that what you are suggesting?

How's this? I re did it with the crop. I prefer the old one, but this is with the suggested crop...

Congratulations on your 400 5.6L! It is truly a wonderful lens. I too prefer your original, but agree with Axel that it would be better if the bird was a bit higher in the frame.

I like the original and agree about having the bird a little higher in the frame and a tad more room on the left. Great exposure and beautifully captured Brian . Thanks for sharing.
