These guys have a nick name as "go away birds" as when they call, it sounds just like one is saying "go away " This is a fairly old image of 2008. The BG is natural.

I think it's beautiful, Stu, you left the perfect amount of canvas on top and bird is a ham :)
Lots of detail in the feathers, good head angle and neat BG.
Congrats!

Lovely Stuart- understated, simple, subtle. I'm a huge fan of portraits like this where you really get to see the detail in the small parts of the bird.

Another name is turaco is it not?

Thanks a lot guys and Fabs.

John, you are correct. The more colourful species of the lourie's are called Turaco's. If you google the species, you will find many different Turaco's. My image is the plain grey Lourie, and is known as such.

Stuart, I liked the composition a lot. Nice looking bird. The details in the feathers have been captured beautifully. The BG goes very well with the bird. Just the right amount of brightness to create the contrast. A tad crop from above might help...but am not very sure.

Lovely shot. The eye is spot on, very nice detail through out and the composition complements the bird very well. Dave

Awesome shot. Looks like the kind of hair do you'd find on the streets of Japan!

Personally I would have cropped it a bit tighter from the top-right corner inward, but that's my style.

Great shot Stuart, I have 1 question though... why f/13? I don't know this bird, but it looks to me that it is not that big and was wondering if a slightly wider aperture would have made any difference.... other than lowering the ISO or speeding up the shutter obviously!

I like the BG and the composition works well with this portrait.
Nicely done!
