Dunlin from Merritt Island NWR in Titusville, FL.

There is an impoundment that the shorebirds can be found in most mornings in good AM light. I will try to capture them flying and in particular as they land using the 600mm + 2x TC. Sometimes I get a few decent images like this one.

Canon 1D Mark III
1200mm
1/1000 sec, f/9, Av, Evaluative, Exp comp: +2/3, ISO: 800

Comments welcome.

This is really elegant Robert…. Looks as though he’s stepping on a mirror until you see the wonderful ripples.

Holy crap! This one looks so good and the reflection is so smooth I'd be tempted to post it upside down just to mess with folks ;)

One can see that its not the first time that you've photographed these birds. Technically superb and overall striking!

It looks almost perfect to me... :)
May be lower angle ;), but... it's OK :)

At MINWR you are standing on a berm road that surrounds impoundments. In most locations you have ground foliage as well, so standing is the only option.

But you are right, a low angle would help. With these guys you have to pan fast and I have never been able to do that on my belly and only reasonably well on my knees. So the standing position helps in this situation. Thanks for your comments.

I like Jim's idea! Can you get a bit more detail on the wing? Bob

Great moment captured! I like the pose, details and reflection. Maybe a bit CW rotation?
