With regards to using the Canon 2xTC (newer version) with f4 lenses and numerous comments about the slowing down of auto focus, is it generally faster to focus on a slow/stationary subject using auto focus or manual focus?

AF is always faster than MF, qssuming you have selected the correct spot on which to AF. You can make AF faster by pre-focusing manually to an area close to the desired focus location. While AF with my 500 f4 may be measured as being slower, it is still very fast on my 1DMK4.

Steve,
I never really had problems with 2x TCs and autofocus on my 1DII and 500 f/4 except for the annoying fact that one has to use the center AF only.

Duh, I just put 2 and 2 together and came up with 5! When I finally get my 1D4 in May I will be able to use my 2.0X with my 70-200 f/4 and still have AF!

Deposit paid and the camera is waiting for me in Australia.

AF is usually faster than MF. The Mark III did quite well with a 2x on an f/4 lens; I haven't tried the combo out on my Mark IV yet.

I agree, the 2x TC AF acquisition with the Mark III is not too bad. I wouldn't use it for birds in flight, but it is certainly usable for static subjects.
