could someone comment on the use of downloading images from
smart media cards to a dvd.are there any good devices on the market to work with mac.?

Do you mean an external battery-powered harddrive wiht card slots? I've seen people use it in the field but don't recall the brand.

It is over the top and beyond anything I ever expected; I can actually see us repeating the trip as the enormity of what we have experienced is again experienced through my images and the images of others.
