It's been a while since I've posted something and just recently I took the time to get out of my car and photograph this hawk (I am still looking in the ID book to really know what I have here) so I figured after some post work I would share it. I always lurk here though.

7D, 600mm
F/5.6, 1/6400th, ISO-800
Av -1/3

Crop off top and left to bring the bird larger and to help composition. Noise Reduction run on the background and bird in separate layers and brought back together.

I went with the High ISO to get the High Shutter speed because I wasn't very smart and didn't have the car turned off when I got out and to use it to stabilize myself/equipment. I notice that even with 6 lanes and 3 shoulders of distance between us, these birds don't like to hang around when someone pulls over. Let alone point a camera at them.

Thanks for looking. C&C always wanted.

Dustin,

I believe it is a juvenile Red Tailed Hawk.

Hi Tim - thanks, I am torn between the red tail and red shoulder and because the tail is in the dark shadow I dont really know what color that tail is...

Nice eye contact makes up for a bit steep shooting angle. I like the perch would crop slightly from top and bottom. I think the specie is an adult red-tailed (juvies have yellow iris). Red-shouldered have different plumage in the chest area.

Lovely pose, and I like the light cast on the head and eye.

You did well given the conditions. Nice to see some of your work.
