From our June, 2009 trip.

Decided to re-work a few images.

Canon 50D and 300mm f/2.8L IS lens.

1/1000 sec @ f/5.6; ISO 200; 0 EV

Looks like great DOF at 5.6 and I think you nailed the exposure. Great

Hey Ed:

What a great surprise to see a picture of these gorgeous creatures. You did great with the exposure and you have a lovely BG. It's nice that you can see the eyes. I try to think about the summer that I made it onto Machias instead of the 2 summers that were canceled due to bad weather. :(

TFS.

Thanks, Martin. Thanks, Marina.

We were fortunate to hit good conditions the past two Junes. And as a bonus the boat out of Cutler (Captain Andy) went with smaller groups both times.

This year we are heading up to Maine in October for fall foliage and moosies! :D And possibly a Maine Audubon pelagic trip out of Bar Harbor.

Nice to have two birds in the frame and I look forward to going there again this summer if I can make it.

I would give the image a bit more room top and bottom if you have.

Well done getting the two in a nice comp. Exposure handled very well. Agree with a little more room especially top for me if you have it. Would be an easy canvas extension if within your ethics. TFS

Very nice pair. I like that you can see the eyes, not easy on these birds. How much of a crop is this to have tha DOF at 5.6?

I reckon that is about the best plumage detail I have seen in guillemots - also the eyes are clearly visible - congrats!

Very sharp and you did well with both blacks and whites. needs more room on the top IMO.

Thanks folks. I appreciate all the comments.

Fabs, all I did was to crop to a square and then I only cropped the right side because there were other oof birds in the distance and just a sliver off the left. Top and bottom are as out of the camera.

Exposure and DOF are great. Haven't been to Machais Seal Island for about 20 years. Will be there in July with a Birding Group from Brookline Bird Club

Lovely details of a bird I know only off birds guides. A real treat, thanks! And a very nice picture, like the crop as is.

I will echo everyone else's congrats on the DOF and exposure here Ed. They look perfect. I kind of agree with Axel though and think adding a little canvas at the top might add to the image. Thanks for sharing!!
