This ship has actually run aground off one of the beaches in Cape Town. I thought it would make a good subject against a setting sun. I purposely left the ship slightly exposed. Should I have created a complete silhouette, or does this work as is. The colours are as shot.

Wishing you all a prosperous 2010.

I liked the tonal range and hues of the sky, Stuart. The way it is presented, i wish i could see some details of the ship. It merges with the water body and has taken away some impact of the image. A bit of shadow recovery will help. A different take could have been to take the image from a lower angle and silhouette the ship against the dusk sky. Well worth visiting it again and try some different angles. TFS.

Thanks and wish you a very happy new year.

ramesh

Hey Stuart,
Same to you!!! I agree with Ramesh on a bit more detail in the FG. Either a S/H adjustment or a levels layer adjustment just on the water area.....both should bring up just enough detail and silhouette to give it a bit more depth. Sky colors look great so just a small tweak will take this up a notch.

Thanks a stack Ramesh and Roman. I was in two minds how to achieve this. I have other images with much more light, but wasnt sure in this how dark to go to create a silhouette. Here is my repost with your suggestion of going lighter. Hope this works.

Stuart, i was thinking more in line like this. I used Capture NX2 to selectively open up the waters and sharpened the image. Also removed those specs of light from the ship. I think the turbulent waters of the sea contrasts well with the serene sky and i realized that only after opening it up. Let me know your views.

ramesh

Hi Ramesh, your version of bringing out more detail works very well - thanks a lot. As I stated, I have others with more light on different days, so I will play and see what results I can achieve.

Hi Stuart, Agree with others regarding seeing more of the ship and Ramesh's repost satisfied that for me.Alot better balance between the darkened sea and bright sky....
