The plums are ripening in my garden so I've taken the opportunity to practise with my new 7D and 300 F4 IS lens prior to heading off to Kenya in the new year. These birds are very co-operative because they aren't nervous, as the wonderful plums keep them occupied, so it gives the photographer time to play around with unfamiliar gear.

Captured on 7D, 300 f4 IS, hand held, F4; 1/180; ISO400; manually focussed.

Post production, slight sharpening and cropping to turn horizontal into vertical.

It's nice and sharp. Looks like the light was not doing any favors though. In this instance I would have been tempted to use a little fill flash. Does the 7D have a built-in flash? That ought to have been sufficient. There is some nice detail here.

Nice detail and sharp. I wonder why did you go manual focus?

I am having trouble with all the AF points and haven't managed to get the settings to suit me. I'm getting the camera focussing on all sorts of things so I went manual. I'll get it worked out soon.

Incredible colours! Well done on getting a sharp image hand held at that shutter speed.
