Restless Flycatcher (Myiagra inquieta) hovering Bowra Station SW QLD
Canon EOS 40D Lens 100-400mm L IS USM at 400mm ISO 400 F6.3 1/1250 available light 8 August 2009

One of a pair of Restless Flycatchers that was flitting over the lagoon at Bowra Station near Cunnamulla Queensland chasing insects with intermittent hovering . Did a series on this behaviour and this image is one of that series. Birds in Backyards website has a great summary of this species together with MP3 calls and distribution map at : http://birdsinbackyards.net/bird/138. Birds in Backyards is part of The Australian Museum's web presence and the birds covered are not all backyard birds in the strict sense of that phrase.

Thanks for viewing

Nice capture, I like the wing position and BG in this one. I would put the bird a bit lower in the frame and sharpen it a tad more and try to get some more details in the blacks. Thanks for the extra information!

This is a very nice capture. The background of the image makes it work for me. It would be nice to pull a bit more detail out of the darkest areas of the image. TFS

I know how difficult it is to get these birds hovering - awesome work Rod! I would consider a tiget vertical with more room top and bottom.

That's a great bg and hovering pose Rod, I'd try a touch more usm around the face.

Thank you all for your comments as an old timer new to digital processing I have reluctant to over use usm etc as in the past it seemed that I was like a kid in a toy shop and wanted to try all the bells and whistles with too heaver a hand. Now I will do some fiddling and repost.
Thanks again
Rod

Excellent capture Rod. I can see why you were happy with this image. Great background and wing position. I would crop from the bottom.
