Flower Bud Macro...

Here's a flower bud taken real close. I need some help with the ID. Used a bright lawn as the BG. Seems to be a hairy little thing at this magnification.

Canon EOS- 1D, Sigma 180 mm HSM DX APO f/3.5 macro lens, Canon 1.4 TC and tripod. Took a while to get this photo.

Charles, I can't help you with the I.D. but it sure does look familiar. I love the bright yellow/greens in this - what a punch of color! The one thing that really sticks out to me is that it doesn't feel straight in the frame - perhaps a slight CCW rotation would pull it straight up.

Great detail - you're really getting good with these tight detail images!

Thanks for catching the leaning flower bud. Here's a correction. Not sure I like it. Seems to have lost some color/ contrast. Hope its straighter...

Hey Charlie - Something happened on the repost, I think, because it is not as sharp on my monitor as the original. Also, call me crazy but I liked the slight lean in the OP. Bokeh is electric lime here and I bet it would look great in print.

Hi Charlie, what a strange little thing! Sorry, can't help you with ID. I'm quite sure we don't have this species here in The Netherlands. I see quite some noise in the shadows, did you have to use high ISO levels (you didn't pose the specs)? Nice work on the BG, it almost looks painted. I would like a little more light on the subject from the front.

Not to add to the confusion but I will. I think the straight up and down look of this is way to sterile for my eye. I'd much rather see it enter the frame at an angle or something to stimulate more interest. Up close, the detail is great but looking at the whole picture, it just seems to stick up there.

I like the combo also. One thing I failed to mention in the posting. I used my Canon 550 EX flash set to 1/125 manual power to open up the shadows. I held it in my hand and moved it back and picked the best image from the LCD as I tried to improve the image...

I don't mind the vertical position, and much prefer it to the slight angle of the first. Lovely details against the yellow BG. Have no clue what it is, but I like it.

The bit of stronger light on the right helps for shaping the bud.....could even be
a bit stronger. Tweaked that and the gold saturation a bit.
For my taste, a perfect vertical is unnatural and seldom seen.
Here is even 5º more rotation and some canvas added.....what do you think?
