Of the images I took of this species this is the only one where the head is dry :). I'm hoping these guys stick around as long as the water is open as these are the most approachable GWTs I've ever encountered! I'm really liking how the rocks balance and ground the image.

Canon 40D + 100-400L @400mm, aperture priority, evaluative metering, 1/400s., f/7.1, ISO 800, +2 EC, natural light, handheld (lying flat on the ground), slight crop left and bottom for comp.

A pretty bird Dan and I like the composition with the rocks also. Nice and sharp. Dave

Dan, wonderful colors rendered here and I too like the rocks in the foreground. Very sharp and love the subtle blue BG. Congrats

Hi Dan, cool pose, and just love the detail and colour on the head. Looking through his feathers, he looks very colourful throughout. The comp is nicely balanced, and the low angle works well.

Way to go Dan, like this image...know exactly where you took it....I like how the two toned green on the head stands out, the highlight in the eye and the preening pose.
As long as this pond stays unfrozen, they'll stay, they seem to be comfortable here
p.s..I answered you question in the other thread

Daniel:

Very nice light, angle, position of bird, details.

Comp. is nice as well. Might consider just a sliver off the top, but very nice as is.

Such a pretty image!! Love it! Composition is great too. If anything maybe just a slight midtones adjustment as it looks slightly on the bright side.

a great image. I also like the rocks, the head turn and the background. Sharpness exposure are perfect.

The placement of the bird in the lower corner and the rocks make this an excellent dynamic composition. Perfect exposure, HA, and preening pose as well.

Well done!

Lovely image Daniel...nice light and I like the comp with the rocks too. Colour and feather details on the bird are great...I especially like the slightly awry feathers and the peek we get at some of the green on the body underneath the wings. I like the head turn and puffed out breast. Congrats!

Cheers!
