Urgent Call For Community Action!

The Florida Keys Wild Bird Center, which has survived on donations for the past 25 years, is in a terminal financial situation. As a result of the current economic crisis, there is little or no money to continue. Closure operations and other contingencies have entered the initial stages of planning and would include a release, or euthantization, of the birds too injured to be released. Folks, this affects us all - almost every Conch that has lived here for any length of time has had a personal encounter with the amazing wildlife rescue services here in the Keys. There's no doubt that this is a pain we would all feel.

Ms. Laura Quinn has devoted a large part of her life to the Center and to caring for the birds, including a reverse mortgage on her homestead property, in order to the keep the Center open and running. We are asking for the Keys Communities to come together to do what they do best: HELP. They are in desperate need of donations and volunteers as they continue to work towards a restructuring in a last ditch effort to keep the Center open. Please contact Bruce Horn at the Center at 305- 852-3186 or S. Harvey Ziegler at 305-852-5257 if you're able to help. Donations may be sent to the Florida Keys Wild Bird Center, 93600 Overseas Highway, Key Largo, FL 33037 or to the Special Birds Only Account at First State Bank, 41 Jolly Roger Dr., Key Largo, FL 33037. You can find them on the web at http://www.fkwbc.org.

The character of a community is defined by the responsiveness of its citizens at the calling of that which is greater than themselves. This, I know, is who we are.
