7D ISO 1600: Back to the Bosque!

I spent a nice afternoon at the Bosque yesterday with Jim Neiger and BPN member Kerry Perkins; this was my first visit of the season. I thought I'd test out the low light AF and high ISO capabilities of the 7D. So far so good; no trouble with AF of Sandhill Cranes flying against a varied BG in low light. IQ at ISO 1600 is quite good. Noise has a very fine grain and is easily managed. Detail is quite well preserved. This image is roughly 80% of horizontal full frame. Nice to be able to take a 1.6 crop body to ISO 1600 and get usable flight images.

That indeed looks quite nice for iso 1600. Bosque will give you a good test of the AF capabilities of the 7D against busy backgrounds.

Very nice capture, excellent high ISO performance with just a little noise creeping in. I thought the image was just a bit dark, perhaps you were after the mood, but tried pulling in the highlight slide to just short of clipping. Thought it was a subtle change, but I like it. Just my .02.

As everyone has said, the colors in the BG make this one special. Very nicely captured. ne round of USM on the bird will make it even better IMO

Hey Doug, you seem to have the 7D sorted. I like the flying angle, well placed in the frame, and of course, the BG colours puts this over the top.

Some very nice details for such high ISO, the pano crop works well here. Nice eye contact and BG.

Don't take it bad. I am just saying what I see. Agree about the yellows been way too bright, may be that gave the impression of a boost in saturation.

When you have made changes to other images, and they have pleased my eye, I have let you know, in this time is the opposite.

Hi Doug: A lot of comments here because this image is outstanding and the background is to die for!! The pano is very cool and its just a darn comfortable photo to look at. Just a little noise showing up on the near underwing which seemed to be stronger on the Randy's repost. Fantastic shot!

Very nice shot Doug and a keeper for sure. Real pleased it's workable too. Canon have come a long way. Like Randy's repost as well. Either version has appeal and easy on the eye.

Thanks for posting these real examples of high ISO performance of the 7D. Those of us with 50D's contemplating an upgrade find such posts really useful.
