Ok, so I'm going to start a quiz series on seabirds regularly found off the Outer Banks of NC. I wish I could post more than one a day, but I'll make do. Some of these are not very good photos, but I'm trying to pick the ones that are most informative. We're going to start off easy, but this one sets the tone for a couple of more that will follow. Post your thoughts, and I'll post an answer when I get ready to post the next one.

Hi All,


Never done any pelagic birding outside of Newfoundland. Up here we don't worry too much about encountering Pterodroma Petrels. We do occasionally get a Hurricane that speeds up the eastern seaboard which gets us excited about the possability of exotic pelagic birds. This bird is a Black-capped Petrel. The neat black cap and lack of a dusky nape help to separate this from the somewhat similar Fea's and Bermuda Petrels. Maybe there are other indicators as well that someone else might get into.

Very nice, never seen this bird before, looking at the books I agree with Dave,
I'd add that the underwing pattern seems to be unique. Keep them coming.

I have never seen this species, I guess I would have to go further south for that.

Axel..try sometimes to go on a pelagic trip with Brian Patteson out of Cape Hatteras...right time of year can be great...

I'm thinking Black-capped Petrel, too......but I really stink at the Pelagics. Brian Patteson really has wonderful trips. I'm hoping to go again this summer......maybe a week or so this time.

Yes, everyone is correct; this is a fairly typical Black-capped Petrel. Am posting next one now.
