Similar to owl harriers also have a facial disk, here (http://www.stanford.edu/~ahazeghi/Photos/birds/harrier%20large.jpg) is a larger version if you want to inspect plumage detail

7D + 400 f/5.6L @ f/9 1/2000sec ISO 400, sw: DPP 3.7.2

Thanks for looking.

The image is both interesting and puzzling....

The image is obviously sharp when one looks at the edges but the body is also almost too smooth looking.

Is it just my eyes?

Jim, it is normal harrier plumage that is like this, I had another shot a while ago with similar comments. Harrier chest plumage is very soft as opposed to other raptors.

What an awesome harrier capture, and these birds are not easy to photograph. Love the head turn, the colors and the details. The larger version shows even better detail. The light in which you were photographing here was obviously so warm.

Very nice image and great bird. I like the light here. I would be tempted to streighten the bird a bit.

Lovely warm tones and plumage detail. Small head turn and eye contact is great. Makes the patterning of our Swamp Harrier look a bit ordinary in comparison.

Nice, plumage and color is quite different to ours, is this a male or female specie?

arash, our local Orno. tells me it is a male, but I can't tell.

We have 4 breeding pairs in our Wetland and there are colour differences (although subtle) between them.

I love the colours on the one you posted.

Nice pose (wing position and head turn). Also like the slightly rising angle and the warm color/light.
