Canon 40D, manual 1/15 @ f/4.6, ISO 100, 200 mm, flash fill

It takes patience to wait until you can see both the red marking behind he head and the black mark on the breast. But it's the spots that grab the eye.

Hi Joel,

You caught this Flicker in a nice pose. Unless it's a captive bird it should go in the wild and free forum. I don't see any man made elements in the image. The image would benefit from selective sharpening on just the bird instead of sharpening the entire image (I'm assuming that's what you did). It could also go a bit brighter.

It's on my lawn, Jim. That's man-made. How should I select just the bird for sharpening? Magic Wand? Lasso? I'm not yet handy with all the PS tools

The background behind the bird does suffer from too severe sharpening artifacts and would be best left in its unsharpened state. In this case, I'd probably have used the lasso around the bird only, without getting into masks.

I have them from time to time in my lawn.....and never can get an image. Beautiful bird....with all the colors showing. BG has been mentioned. One thing you might want to remove is the "steel eye" from the flash.
