Well, my husband finally got tired of me saying how heavy the D300 with the Nikon 500 f/4 was and so went about designing a new type support for when a tripod just was not convenient. A sneak peek of the protype, which has Patent Pending, is on my blog, www.naturesportal.blogspot.com (http://www.naturesportal.blogspot.com) . Stay turned!:D It will be adjustable and colapsible.

I think a Bush Hawk would give you more freedom of movement.
However, your design will support the weight much better.

Congrats to your husband on a beautifully designed and constructed camera support!

I think you are on to something here. I have seen people use these with a monopod.

Several years ago, a company called Photo Control Corp marketed a very similar device, called a GoPod, designed by Cory Schubert. It's very similar to your husband's design, and has the added advantage of a gimbal mount. Check it out: http://gopod.wordpress.com/product-shots/

The gimbal head is an interesting thought, but we wanted to make it with as few moving parts to have to worry about. Nothing can flop down if left untightened.

Good work by hubby, I know you are trying to keep it simple and uncomplicated. My 2 cents would be the the handle under the camera, could be a drop down monopod to keep the weight off if you were in one spot for a while. Would also steady it too. or at least have the option of a threaded fitting to install on or off said monopod.

Nancy, Great idea! How much does the prototype weigh? Can it go up and down or just side to side?

Yes Al, boats were one of my main thoughts with this device! Chris the handle under the brace can be unscrewed and a monopod screwed in. Denise the brace that the camera and lens is on is telescopic so it can be lowered or go a bit higher. So far we have it in at just under 2.5 lbs.

Nancy,

What a great idea. I'm glad to see all the support you are getting here at BPN. It's nice to see creative photographers out there coming up with innovative ideas to help other photographers.

Good luck with your idea and God bless,

chris

Hi Nancy,

This looks a lot heater than the GoPod, but how small will it fold up? (the constant problem for those who use light aircraft to get to lodges)

This would probably work great from an open safari vehicle my holy grail.

Please keep us up to date.

Ken I know as of now the shoulder braces will be able to be taken off to lie flat. I will keep everyone informed!:) Thanks so much!
