appreciate any comments on sigma 50-500 mm lens.as all around lens with
bird and nature photography in mind thanks

Fabs said it right Stuart. If you are used 200-400, 50-500 is not going to work for you.

I agree. I have a 50-500 Sigma I use on my Sony A100 and it is soft once you pass 400mm or so. Tho it could be the photographer LOL.

I also owned this lens, not as sharp...and I had lots of problems..although Sigma repair in Canada really tried hard, after 4 different lenses (just wouldn't work with my D70), I gave up traded my lens with Sigma for a 80-200 (which I eventually sold) and went with Nikon lenses.
As stated above, out to 400mm works ok...really needs image stabilization...I found it very heavy...
But having said that, if money is an issue...for a little over $1000 bucks can't beat the price.

p.s...rumours has it, from Nikon that a 100-500 is in the works...

Hello Stuart,

I enjoyed the versitility of the Sigma 50 -500mm. Some of my best moose images were taken with that lens.
I still recommend it to anyone who cannot afford Nikon's 200-400 f4.
Its a little slow for BIF but I still managed to catch a couple.
There is the Canon 100-400, great lens for the money but I don't think it works well with a teleconverter.
I have the Nikkor 200-400 f4 and it is useable with the 1.4 teleconverter. that gets you to 550mm.
