This immature Ruby Throated Hummingbird is just taking flight from the top of a broken branch. This was a 4 light setup and really stopped the wing motion. All of the lights were Canon EX series with one low in front aiming up at the bird from underneith, one each on the left and right and one high aiming down from the top. When I get one more light I will add background highlights. I spent most of the summer following these birds around my back yard.

Canon 1DMK3
Canon 400 DO/IS with 25mm of extension tube at abouut 7 feet
On the tripod
f/22
1/30s

I like the composition and pose in this one. The BG is a bit dark for my taste.

Hi Mark and big welcome. This is a very striking image with excellent pose and composition as well as beautiful detail. I looked at this image for sometime and felt that perhaps just a bit of cropping of the bottom would enhance this creation as the hummingbird is so small and the perch almost seems overwhelming to me ??

I like dark BG's and don't really have any nits here. I like the open wing pose and the look. Well done.
