My good friend Dave Barnes calls this, his practise grounds - the University of Pretoria sports grounds. We have endless opportunities to photograph these herons, together with Grey herons, and Egrets.

Dave:

Nicely exposed, composed and sharp. Like the alulae showing so well. Stick a plus.

In a perfect world, would prefer the bill to not merge with the wing, minor point.

Sharpness and wing position look great and the nesting material adds to it. I also wish for more wing/bill separation.

If I could get anywhere near as sharp an image as this one, I would be so pleased. I'm very impressed. Did you use any noise adjustment software and most important, what microadjustment have you used for this lens on this camera?

Agree to axel about the wing beak pos, but just loved the wing spread, details, the blue Bg adds so well here and the twig adds interest to the frame, congrats..

Stuart beautiful details and pose! The stick is a nice addition and the eye is sharp. I too wish for a bit more separation between bill and wing. Really nicely done.

Excellent shot Stuart beautiful detail and a nice wing position I really don't care about the position of the bill relative to the wing.......This is very nice.

I am OK as is Bro, but I wonder why there appears to be not much detail in the legs/feet? The overall pose is just a killer mate! Well done! :) James above hit it on the head for me too in all honesty! ;)
