Taken one evening last week, this Great-blue Heron was placed perfectly on this perch as the sun began its slow descent. I tried some with the heron lined up directly in front of the reflections - none of which I was happy with. I was also hoping the sun would set behind this guy - but alas it flew away before handing me that opportunity. This was taken along the shores of the Ottawa River. The province of Quebec is seen across shore, where this guy would be called the "Grand héron bleu".

Canon 40D + 100-400L @285mm, aperture priority, evaluative metering, 1/800s., f/8, ISO 400, +0.3 EC, handheld, full frame, some small OOF branches patched out near top of frame.

Cool light, composition and silhouette. Does it need a bit CCW rotation?

While I really like it as presented, it would also look great as a more square crop, say down to the upper shoreline.

Super comp Dan, and I wouldnt change a thing. The heron placed perfectly, and the sun's reflection on the water puts this over the top. Great opportunity well used.
