Yes, a dog can learn new tricks. While out on a walk along the beaches of Lake Michigan last week I saw this leaf lying on a bed of rocks and I cranked the aperture down to f20! Yes, I had to steady myself first as it was practically unchartered territory but I lived to show the photo and am no longer afraid of living at the opposite end of my sweet f2.8.

Canon 40D, EF 70-200mm f/4L
f20 @ 1/40th, ISO 400
Manual mode, handheld, late morning light
I added selective sharpening to the leaf only and added a post-crop vignette in ACR.

I'm pretty sure that lens will stop down some more:D but this looks great at f/20. Welcome back to the site. Great contrast and details on the leaf.

I don't know Mike...I might have to take medication to steady me down to f32!

Julie, At first I thought this was a selective desaturation :) Love the contrast between the leaf and stones. Very nice comp. I might just sharpen the leaf a tad more to let all that detail really shine!

Hahaha, Mike and Roman have made two converts out of us :(

I admit that for certain applications it's the way to go, and the proof is right here!!!
Love the contrasting colors.

Jules, I like when you go to F20. Beautiful light and the color really pops against the neutral gray rocks. For my taste I would wish for a bit more room at the bottom. Nice job!!

You can use tripod, or shoot @ ISO3200 using a D3 or D700 :)

Beautiful shot !! Like the vignetting.

The color and shape of the leaf against the rocks works beautifully--warm against cool, different types of curves. Very pleasing composition. Now that you know you can do f20, I look forward to f32.

Jules,

Way to use color to isolate a wonderful subject...
