This photograph was taken in early June in Corpus Christi, TX. I am way out of my league re shorebird ID but looking through the Sibley and taking into account the size as I remember it, the reddish base of its lower mandible, the black legs and the rufous patch on its back it seems to suggest White-Rumped Sandpiper. But please feel free to set me straight. :)

Thanks in advance! Best, JR

White-Rumped (?) Sandpiper

Hi John

I'm working on a response to ID query & this is a timely post for comparison purposes!

The small headed & long bodied jizz, together with long primary projection indicate either Baird's or White-rumped. You have mentioned in your comments that the pinkish base to lower mandible suggests WRS, but (IMO) it is the ID clincher for that species.

Given few reddish feathers shown here by early June, I would probably age this as 1st summer bird.

Cheers: Wayne

PS: A very nice image too!!

John, This is one sweet image of, yes indeed, a White-rumped Sandpiper. Fantastic lighting and a nice low shooting angle. Perfect head angle too!

Good Shooting!

Good exposure, sharpness, colours...and perfect HA. Too bad the reflection was so weak, but that is rather minor in an otherwise beautiful "classic" shorebird photograph.

I dream of making an image like this. We have these fellows in CR, but I simply don't have the time to go the coast. Love the combination of white, brown and gray.

Lovely photo John. Great ha and details and a very simple "habitat" setting. Nicely done. Dave

I like the calm water, sharpness and light. I might remove the sheen on the legs and lighten the eye a bit.

I love it sooo much. Perfect bg and pose with nice head turn. My only comment is for straightening the image. Some CCW rotation is needed!

Love to see this rarely photographed (or posted) shorebird. A nice candidate for my book. :)
