Anhinga at Anhinga Trail

The ambient light was gross, so I pulled out a bottle of my own light.

Nikon D2X
Nikon 600 AFS F4
1/1250 @ F5.6 ISO 400
WB Auto -1

Flash (aka bottled light) at -1/3

Very cool pose and composition. I like your bottled light. The blacks look a bit too contrasty on my monitor.

Well Yoda James.....i do like it for the most part. Nice open beak, head turn over the shoulder. As mentioned above the center body does look somewhat blocked up or dark. But knowing you, looks like you got what could have been taken away from the image and the circumsatnces. I just love the eye and the details in the open mouth, red area. Kudos for this one, and the new site my brother.

Axel,
It could be. I am still adjusting to a LCD monitor.

Great pose James and excellent detail where it counts, even showing the vascular system in the mouth!! Love that open bill. Agree blacks in lower right corner have lost detail.

Nice over the shoulder portrait. The light area on the near wing is distracting but what are you gonna do...:D

Just a great pose and super detail and colors in the face--nits mentioned on the black parts, but I am drawn to the face and the dark does not bother me much.

Hi James,

You have a very interesting composition. Looks like the upper body and neck are a hair sharper than the eye but still very sharp. The BG is simply awesome. Really hard to keep details in the dark areas.

Froggie, I like the sqauwk. Would not have minded a bit more flash on the face and a bit more dof for the near-wing.

later and love and hope that you and Maclom avoided the T-storms... artie

The eye on this guy is amazing. The color, pose and background are all great. My only thought on the dark areas, with the DOF being what it is, could there be no detail because it was OOF? There aren't any true black pixels in the image. Just a thought.

To me, the interest is in the upper part of the frame...the open beak. Do you think by cropping just under the white feathers, it would solve the problem of no detail in the blacks?

It looks better than anything else I've seen here!

DD, this is remarkable!!!
I got lens envy, and I won't be getting the 600/4 VR, changed my mind since I like the 200/400/4 so much, I would only use it for Bosque.
300/2.8 is on my wish list, though, would like your opinion...
