Here is the story behind this image:
While photographing a colony of nesting Snail Kites, I noticed a pattern where a pristine adult male Snail Kite would fly from it's nest and glide over to a nearby perch when his mate flew into the nest. He repeatedly used this perch when he left the nest. I envisioned an image of the kite gliding with it's wings wide open from the topside view and the purple flowers of pickeral weed and the green vegetation around them out of focus in the bg. The problem was that I needed to be about 10 feet above the water to get the angle I needed for the shot. The plan I came up with was to place a 6 foot stepladder on my boat and sit on top of the ladder while waiting for the critical moment. I picked a day with clear skies and positioned myself to take advantage of the light angle, angle of the bird, and the bg. I had to wait a couple of hours but I got the image pretty much as I envisioned it.
