Shield bugs have glands in their thorax between the first and second pair of legs which produce a foul smelling liquid. This liquid is used defensively to deter potential predators.

Hi Kaushik,

I am trying to decide if I like the image dark as presented. Is this how it looked in nature? I am not really troubled by that as the bright spots on the bug bring your eye right to it - so in that sense the darkness works well. I will be interested in how others feel about that.

Compositionally the image works well for me. I think the inclusion of the negative space above the bug is a nice touch here as it lends a sort of mystery to him. If you lightened the image, some of this space may need to disappear.

Thanks for the story on the but - always nice to learn something. The small dark slice coming out of the bug's behind does not appear to be a part of him and perhaps you might want to clone that out.

Beautiful image.

Hi Kaushik - These colourful bugs make interesting subjects but I feel a little more exposure would add more imapct to this image.
