I don't have a lot of experience ID'ing raptors so I'll let the experts weigh in on that one. He's a beautiful hawk and you some nice light and detail on him. I might have liked more direct light on the bird but it may not have been possible and the sidelighting does put a nice catchlight in the eye. I think that you've done well given the circumstances.

I agree with what Lana said. This looks like a young Red-tailed Hawk to me.

That was the closest match I could find in the book I was using and I knew they are in the area. IDing is not my strong point. That is the reason for the question mark. What do you think it is?

A Red-tailed Hawk for sure, JP. The belly band is distinctive for this species and the light eye indicates it is a juvenile, and also why it has not a red tail as yet.
