Beautiful shot Charles, I love the soft lighting and head turn.
detail is nice as well.
The bit of vegetation to the right of the bird is the only bit that I might consider editing out.

Paul,

:), the lily pad is what I like about this particular image, providing a sense of habitat, scale, depth perception, etc.

Best,

Chas

So you used an incident meter and then set exposure manually? What was the metering mode and was it Al Servo etc.

Yes, incident set manually. Meter mode was Manual, as opposed to Av or Tv. Meter Pattern (Eval, cntr, spot) in camera is irrelevant since I used incident to determine exposure. Focus was AIS w/ focus point positioned over head.

Fine image, Chas. A small detail that I love is the pattern of water droplets on the loon's face.

I like the light and the head attitude gives a really serene feeling to this. I think an incident light meter is a very underused tool.
