Hi Steve, the central comp works well here, and love the DOF, as the head on these guys has the most detail. The head is sharp, with good detail. I would try and bring out his LHS shadow if possible, and I think a pano crop will work in this, even as far as halfway. Just a thought. Are garter snakes poisonous?

unbelievable DOF! love the effect and the head is pin sharp, which is pretty much the point. I also dig that you can make out its coils in the OOF BG.

Interesting light, image design, and subject. Great use of selective focus and (lack of) d-o-f.

What's not to like about this. Detail an selective focus very well handled.

Thanks to all for the comments.
Stuart, I debated about going with a pano crop but in the end decided that I liked the OOF coils. It gave me the impression of springing the body toward the viewer. And Garter snakes are non-venomous. They're pretty common throughout the USA.
