This is the entrance on the way up to the tour of Alcatraz prison in San Francisco. It started as a fort, then prison, was occupied by the Indians from 1969-1971, and then finally established as a National park in 1972, It is a fascinating place to visit.

Jackie, I only saw it from the wharfside. Looks neat-Do you get to go inside?

You forgot to mention that there is some good photography to be had there in the spring of the nesting gulls and some pretty incredible views of the city and the bay. Did you go into solitary confinement and have them shut the doors? It's pitch black and really creepy.

Still in the middle of the trip D, got the whole tour and went inside. It has a lot of neat history, and actually some beautiful gardens.

One place I would like to visit .... think I'll pass on the solitary confinement experience :)
