As the fieldseason is nearing an end I have a little time to drive around to take photo's yet again. I found this common tern following a ditch that I was driving next to. Unfortunately the ditch was between me and the sun making it impossible to make nicely lit tern flightshots. As the ditch was nearing an end I had to think fast dailed in a K of 10000 and went for a sillouhette shot. At first my AF failed but caught on just in time to get this frame right before it dove down and caught a fish and flew off. I was happily surprised about the sunlit tail and the diving pose. Hope you like it too,

Krijn:

Striking photo. The tail makes me think of a flower.
Quick thinking on your part re: color temp. I think it is very complimentary.

Thanks!

very dynamic, super color and love the lighted tail.....like an afterburner.

Might try some rotation to get off horizontal axis a bit.....give the dive a slight angle

wonderful image, thanks for sharing

Man this one is terrific, pure light! Your evaluation of the shooting conditions was really fast and you decided to go for a very creative and successful way. The selection of an apropiate color temperature can be done in post processing but it is much better in the way you did it. Until I saw this one, my favorite image from you was a silouette of a displaying crane agaist a fantastic orange BG but now I am not sure, but both are fantastic images. Very good job my friend :-)

Great idea and well done. I like the silhouette of the body and wings combined with the translucent tail. I'm wondering what it would look like with a color temperature of about 7000K.

Great result for your quick thinking, Krijn. Interesting to see the aerodynamics of the tail and wings to get the bill vertical.

Looks like a BBC entry to me. That tail is amazing.
