Hi, Found this Dark-eyed Junco (red-back) at about the 5500' level foraging along the bank of a small stream in Madera Canyon foraging for dried berries at 1:53 PM. More identification than anything. Used a Olympus E-510 IS-1, with Zuiko 70-300mm (140-600 equiv) 1:4-5.6 ED, Aperture Priority, F 6.3, 1/640s, ISO 400, 0.00EV, 404mm, Auto WB. Dappled light amongst the trees. I was waiting for this fast moving bird to jump up on that large rock in front of it. Alas, it wasn't in the cards today .. Gus

You got a nice photo of him, Gus: good color, exposure, and detail, and the background isn't too distracting, IMO.

Tough light in that setting Shadows are just about unavoidable Got excellent sharpness on the bird and a good pose Would blur the area around the bird some Will make him pop even more !!!!

Hi folks, Thanks for looking at my photo. Al, I tried your suggestion by giving the furthest bg a light blur leaving the front twig untouched. In fact, using Robert O'Tooles Quick Mask tutorial I used his eraser tip to clean the twig after selecting the bg to blur. What do you folks think? Gus

I like it Gus Does make a difference For this little guys the best solution is laying flat on the ground Will take care of surrounding bg !!!
