Great BG Charles, the incoming wave and dark sky give this image a somewhat dramatic mood. Great pose and lighting on the gentoos. I am not sure about the other bird on the beach (gentoo? penguin?). Although he gives the viewer the idea that these two are not isolated, I find him mildly distracting. I would be intrested to hear some opinions.

The bird in the back is a Magellanic Penguin. I like him as he sets the scene.

Lovely low sun with the dark BG. I like the symmetry of the Gentoos and the striding Magellanic looks well fed!

Wow are you ever close. It must be quite the sight. Lovely photo. Not sure if you might have done a tad more to the eye on the right bird. Dave

Super angle, and well exposed on both the blacks and whites. I really like the darker skies in the BG.

I agree the BG penguin really adds alot to the scene...I love it as presented. I really like the sunny conditions on your subjects combined with the darkish skies in the BG.

Chas:

Dramatic sky really sets it off. I would be curious if you have another in the series with the rear bird just a bit more to the left, perhaps a stride or so. I think the slight increase in separation would be a plus.

I though flash had been used as well, but perhaps the effect is from the dark background with light foreground.
