This plant looks like a giant dandelion; the seed head is about 3 inches across. I made this image looking through the seed head directly at the setting sun because I like the repeating patterns.
Canon 20D, Sigma 150/2.8 macro, ISO 100, Av 1/30 at f/16, tripod

This works wonderfully, Chris! I really enjoy Goat's-beard (or Western Salsify) and am really glad that you featured this prairie plant so well. The composition and colors are really nice.

Judd -- I don't know about the "western"; this is either Tragopogan dubius or T. pratensis, photographed in St. Charles County, Missouri. Both have yellow flowers. T. porrifolius (commonly called Salsify) also grows in the region, but has a purple flower.
