Was happy to finally get some shots of this species better than my digiscoped efforts before.
I scared them off the pond accidentally when first arriving so decided to lay in wait on my stomach with camera setup in front low profile to pose as little a threat as possible.
By waiting a while I was finally rewarded when the flight-prone pair swam into view.

Exposure: 1/1000
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 700 mm
ISO Speed: 320
Exposure Bias: 0 EV
Flash: On

D300 + 500mm f4 AFS-I + 1.4x teleconverter + tripod + SB800/Better Beamer.

Thanks for looking.

Paul the light is a bit harsh to my taste and the saturation seems to be high, specially in th ereds. The low angle is good but the image seems to be a big crop. I like the fantastic eye contact and the low angle and, of course, the very cool species. Keep them comnig :-)

Awesome species thats for sure! :)
I agree that the reds are oversaturated and based on a few jaggies on the backtail area it does appear to be a noticeable crop. Keep working this guy! :)

Thanks guys, it looked good late last night but this morning I can see what you are saying is true.
It wasn't all that big a crop but maybe I pushed it a bit too much.
Will work on my "over-saturation" problem as well.
cheers!

Nice low angle and a pleasing bg with good eye contact make this image a good one, nits mentioned previously are spot on :)

A big ditto on the over-SAT. I do not have anything good on this species.... Where was the image created?
