Hi,

Posted on the POTN net by some Canon users/computer gurus is a procedure - maybe it is called an action - for noise reduction when shooting at ISO 3200 and 6400.

What you do and how you do it is beyond my beginner PS level; however, the before and after images are incredibly impressive. Several of the posters have indicated that as a result of this procedure they are now frequently using ISO 3200 and 6400.

The procedure is run in conjunction with Neat Image Pro, which I am told by David Thomasson
is one of the top noise reduction applications.

If anybody tries the procedure, please post your results and to the extent that you can simplify the instructions - us newbies would be grateful!

Not being very technically minded I understood little of this.
Is it really only for JPEGS?
Do you have to have Neat Image for it to run?

Any assistance would be greatfully received.

Yes, you do have to have Neat Image; it will work with both RAW and JPGs.

It says in the intro:

If You Shoot JPG you must upload the included .PF2 file to your camera for optimal JPG settings for this action.<o></o>

I haven't used this; wouldn't know where to start.

I saw that post when first put up. Sort of off topic but at this point I would not consider using those high ISO's with any regularity shooting birds. I do shoot some sports inside where those speeds are necessary and noise reduction works well. With sports and performing arts fine detail is not as critical as it is when you are capturing subjects as birds where you want to emphasize detail as oppossed to the fore mentioned where the action is the subject. Noise reduction no matter how well applied is going to eliminate some of that detail.

I hear you Doug. Conceivably though, it is just a Photoshop/Neat Image action & should be able to be duplicated on a Mac. The noise reduction technique used shouldn't be platform specific, it's just an algorithm.
