I was out looking for roadrunners when this little guy popped up on a bush nearby. Shot handheld with my 40D and 100-400. He didn't hang around very lone; this is the best one of maybe 5 shots I took.

Jeremy:

Good to be prepared for the unexpected!

This guy is sharp, generally well exposed except for a few hot pixels in the white crown. The light was a bit harsh, and off to your right, but I think the angle worked well for you, the face and bill are well lit.

The background is fine. I would be tempted to tone down the foliage a bit because it is bright enough to distract from the bird.

Thanks for posting!

I really like this image. It is sharp, especially for hand held. The BG is excellent. I don't see any hot pixels on the head but I often miss that kind of problem. I would like this image to be mine, so you know I like it. Thanks for sharing with us.

Nice pose and BG. The bird looks a little oversharpened, and as noted above, the whites in the crown are hot.

If you had been more on the light angle, this image would be much better.

I wish you had left the original to compare with the repost. I like ethis one, especially the pretty BG and the Y shape of the perch, framing him.

Most nits have been mentioned. You did very well in these conditions. WHile softer, and less strong, light would be preferable, don't ever hesitate to pull the trigger. I know I don't. :D Thanks for sharing.

Fabs,

This is not a repost; I posted this photo only once, as you see it now.
