View Full Version : THEY ARE HERE!!!!!: COMPOSITION EXERCISES

Fabs Forns

They are here!!!!!

We are going to use black squares to evoke the following feelings: ORDER, INCREASE, BOLD, CONGESTED, TENSION, PLAYFUL.
No colors are to be used, although you can used shades of gray and gradients. Use the squares as layers so you can move them around. The transform tool will be very handy to scale or rotate. Be creative and OWN your space!

Example of BOLD

Composition Exercise: BOLD

Composition Exercise BOLD

I started off with this major design and realized for me bold was all about color and hard lines so I give you both versions of what I felt bold to be. At least I feel that way today!!
I woke up this morning and this does not feel as bold as it did last night-I would make the center square larger-today.

What emotion does this invoke in you?

Tskkkkk, James, no colors but shades of gray :)

ORDER!

Fabs,
I deleted the offending post. I will read the fine print next time.

Thought James could be playful too. Denise I like your bold, and David good one for tension. Hope to get some posted on the W/E. Great exercise. Makes you think about your viewfinder:) and composing before you press the shutter button!

another one.........this for tension! Even though this follows the ROT position.......one block out of place causes a very large amount of tension and chaos. If you look at this for any amount of time......your eye always goes to the out of place box. Very similar to photography.....takes one out of place to tuin an orderly composition.

David, Is it all of your posts in this forum or just this post-because this post is a sticky post it may be different.

It appears to be all of them.

This is on the main page. On other forums it says "you may edit your posts."

Tried to place the smaller black square in a really irritating place. Wanted to use a lot of negative space too. Roman I think you are cheating using the stars:) for effect:D

I definitely has tension.....even with all the space. Nicely done!.....as for the cheating.....I did read the fine print.........nothing about not using lighting effects:D! Used lens flare and spot on the whole BG. Given the opportunity.......I go way outside the box!

James Shadle

My take on tension.
All of elements are the same as my previous post.
It's your lump of "clay".

Fabs Forns
04-22-2009, 09:02 PM
Hmmmm, the first one strikes more as congested than orderly. Second is a good tension, although I prefer less elements.

Guys, this is working out terrific!!!

Thanks all for participating and it will be good if you can offer your impressions on the compositions also.

For some of them posted, Paul for tension I might have put the bottom square tip on the middle triangle like you have on the top. Might have created more tension? For order I might have made the bottom black square the same size??
For Roman's playful, I thought it could also represent order as the squares all seem to go up in size. (didn't notice the star effect at all :)) The tension one I thought was a good example as your eye goes exactly to the spot where it is different.
Al's does not fall into any category mentioned:) Perhaps playfull confused.........:D
Like David's bold, very dramatic. Could maybe fall under increase too?? Thought David's order could also be playful. Think it was order from disarray tried to be shown??
Denise very good example for order. No other category for that one to my eyes:)
James first post struck me as order, maybe a little tight as Fabs mentioned. The second one I found bold.
David's one for playful looks like fun and a caterpillar to me:)

Oh dear ... my symbolism didn't quite work!! :D :( These "clue" lines weren't allowed, so I couldn't include them!

Jackie and Dennis, you both got the compo right. Dennis, I usually prefer less elements in the compo. You were consistent in using the square but the different textures distract a little from your message IMO.
Keep up the good work!

We will continue with this exercise this week and use the TANGRAM next week, when we will be back from the Farm workshop.

Thanks Denise, some of these certainly are stimulating my thinking. Looking at the ones I've done so far it looks like my tendency towards simplicity in composition is rather dominant.

Roman, You have too much time on your hands. I have no clue as to how any of you are creating the boxes in the first place, or positioning them in the second place...

Roman Kurywczak
05-28-2009, 04:23 PM
HA ha! I wish Artie! Just a touch of compulsion! OK, maybe a large touch.....but in a good way. I used to stipple when I was in art school....now that may be OCD!
I used the marquee tool on a new black/white pallete....to draw the squre.....duplicated the layer...selected move tool....dragged it to a canvas.....shrunk/enlarged it with the tool....applied it.
This would have also worked on Fab's image to select and drag and compose. I'm sure others will chime in.
Now let me get this straight......you didn't have a clue for the boxes......but you give great advice on edge sharpness in the latest BAA bulletin? Go figure!
I see you got to spend some time with Phil too! Will see him tonight.

"It don't matter if you're black or white"

As already shown, sometimes the thirds just don't matter. The brain takes care of whats right or wrong, left or right, inside or outside, upside down or right side up.

Excellent exercise Fabs
