I used my onboard flash for a mild fill-in in my first few shots of this fly/bee (no idea on the ID :o), but the artificial lighting messed up the eye colors. So I flipped down the on-board, and just used available light. Not sure if the edge of the leaf running diagonally across the frame is an asset or liability..... comments are highly appreciated.

20D + 100 2.8 USM macro, f/8, ISO 400, 1/160 sec, manual exposure in available light, hand held
RAW, levels/contrast adjustment, selective USM/NR, cropped to about 60% of original frame

The diagonal leaf edge is beneficial to the composition in my books Romy. Head nice and sharp and colourful compound eyes.
have you applied some selective blur to BG - looks a bit excessive to me.

Thanks for the comments, John..... no selective blur on the BG, but I did use some NR on that area.

Hi Romy,

The soft diffused light is really pleasing and the sharpness is Impressive for a handheld available light shot.

I have been to your PBase site in the past, I like your work alot.

Hey Romy, really like this shot. I like the DOF, and great colors in the eyes,
