This is the city i call home. This is on the west coast of the Island of Newfoundland, on the far east coast of Canada.

A city of only about 20,000, one of the main employers in the town is a paper mill, which, at one time was the largest in the world. You can see the mill and the massive amount of steam it expells on the right side of the photo.

FYI, our city has one of the largest snowfalls of any city in Canada...a whopping 16 feet on average!

I also come from a small papermill town of 12000 people. 30 years ago, there was also a smell comming with the steam!

in know the smell all to well Rene! thankfully, it's gotten a lot less stinky in the last 15-20 years or so with them using much less sulfur than years before.

Here is the look of the paper mill from my hometown. The smoke is multiplied by this cold winter temperature. Terrible picture but lots of smoke...

we're about 700 kms from St. Johns and Signal Hill! this side of the Island is very different Alfred...much more mountainous terrain and very scenic!

the snow does indeed get pretty deep here. If you don't have any winter outdoor hobbies it makes for one very long winter! it usually lasts from early November until mid May or so. Thankfully, i grew up in a town with a ski hill within 1/2 a mile.

this is what keeps my sanity in the wintertime here in western Newfoundland! taken last Saturday...

these are some photos that friends of mine had taken last weekend. they are from a friends camp that is located close to one of our favorite riding areas about 30 miles from home.

this cabin is actually built about three feet off the ground!

now you can see why we want to get to Venice Rookery ASAP! :D

looks like a quiet little spot Rene! my kind of place!

the smoke almost looks too clean to be so.

i would bet during the day hours they only release steam and just a little smoke. here in Corner Brook that is the norm until nightfall....then they start pouring the nasty stuff out of the stacks under the cover of darkness! :eek:

if you live upwind of the mill you live with soot falling from the sky every night.
