I found a local butterfly garden and thought I would give it a go. I did not have my macro lens or tripod with me, plan on returning with them. What do you think? Taken with the D300, Nikon 70-300VR, iso 640, f 9, 1/160. All C&C appreciated.:) Also does one know the name of this type of butterfly.

Nancy, I had to look through two of my butterfly books but I finally found it. It's a Queen - a member of the Brushfooted butterflies...technical name is Danaue Gilippus.

You did a good job of getting the entire butterfly in focus -f9 is a good aperture for this kind of work. You can go shallower in aperture but then if the BF moves his/her wings you'll have parts that are really OOF.

I do think you've got a bit of a color cast - you might try to move it more towards the cool side as the leaves on the plant really look yellow. Also the butterfly book describes this as a dark orange/red and yours is definitely more orange/yellow.

Nice going for your first time out. Botanical gardens are great places to get a good look at insects - especially butterflies! Enjoy them and next time take the macro too!

Agree on the color cast, Nancy. Also. as for composition, if you take an inch off the bottom, you can get the Bfly off the center. Macro can be a lot of fun!
Give a holler when you are in the Glades, please :)

Agree with the above. I think you could even go a little cooler.
