Announcing 2010 Florida Forever Conservation Photography Calendar contest
Are you a nature photographer? Are you passionate about conservation? If so, you have a chance to help preserve some of Florida’s most endangered landscapes by entering the 2010 Florida Forever Conservation Photography Calendar contest, sponsored by the Legacy Institute for Nature & Culture. (www.linc.us (http://www.linc.us/)) with cooperation from the Florida Conservation Photographers.
For more than two decades, Florida Forever has been preserving natural Florida by purchasing individual parcels of land to protect them from development. Yet nearly three million acres of sensitive land and water have been identified that are still in desperate need of protection.
The 2010 Florida Forever calendar will use conservation-driven photography to help educate Floridians about the importance of the Florida Forever program. Each month of this beautiful calendar will feature a photograph of a high-value landscape from the Department of Environmental Protection’s priority acquisition list. You can view last years calendar at http://linc.us/Calendar2009.html (http://linc.us/Calendar2009.html).
The Winner will be joining the likes of 11 top pros including Clyde Butcher, Jeff Ripple and John Moran, the winning image from this contest will be published as the 12<SUP>th</SUP> month. In addition to having their photo published, the winner will also have a short biography published, including a web site if available, and be paid $250.

Only one image may be entered per contestant. This is very important. One of the stipulations of the Florida Forever Flickr group (ihttp://www.flickr.com/groups/floridaforever/) that members are only allowed to enter one image ever. So before you enter your image make sure it’s your best shot!
You must be a member of the Flickr group, “Florida Conservation Photographers.” If you are not a member of this group, you must send a request to the group’s administrators to be invited. Non-member’s will not be allowed to participate in the contest.
Since the 2010 Florida Forever Conservation Photography Calendar only publishes images of landscapes that Florida Forever itself deems the most threatened, only a limited list of specific landscapes are eligible to photograph for the contest. In general, an entrant is allowed to take a “ecosystem” approach to the eligible landscapes listed below. An “ecosystem” approach is defined as photographing an ecosystem that is directly representative and geographically adjacent to the eligible landscape. Visit the Web site www.fnai.org (http://www.fnai.org/) and click on the Florida Forever Projects Map link to locate the following eligible landscapes:
Apalachicola River (Jackson, Gladsden, Liberty, Calhoun counties)
Camp Blanding – Osceola Greeway (Baker, Bradford, Clay, Union counties)
Charlotte Harbor Estuary (Charlotte, Lee, Sarasota counties)
Etoniah/Cross Florida Greenway (Clay, Putnam, Marion, Levy, Citrus counties)
Garcon Ecosystem (Santa Rosa County)
Green Swamp (Lake, Polk counties)
or
Perdido Pitcher Plant Prairie (Escambia County)
Devil’s Garden (Hendry, Collier counties)
Save Our Everglades (Collier County)
Although a name, phone number, address and other contact information is not required to enter the contest, this information is required for the contest winner. Contest administrators will contact the winner personally, upon which time the winner is required to provide not only contact information but also anecdotal details about the photograph itself for the purposes of writing a detailed caption. If these details are not accurate or are not sufficient in meeting the needs of the publication, disqualification will result and an alternate contest winner will be chosen.
Each entry is required to contain a tag that states where the images was photographed according to the nomenclature stated in rule number 6. For example, a photographed entered from “xxx” must be tagged as such.
Only photographs are allowed. Videos, screen shots, and illustrative media are not allowed. The extent to which digital manipulations to the image will be allowed is up the administrators of the contest. In general, only minor adjustments to contrast, saturation, sharpening, etc., will be allowed. HDR images are allowed, but make sure the image accurately represents the scene that was captured.
Only horizontal images will be considered.
Only images of either landscapes or wildlife will be considered. On occasion, an image with a man-made object might be considered (like a boardwalk). However, in general, it is best to stick with just images of landscapes and/or wildlife. Here’s a tip: the judges favor photographs that focus on the landscape.
Black and white photographs are not allowed.
Photographs of animals in zoos are not allowed.
The winner must be able to supply a RAW, PSD, TIF, or high quality JPEG original of the winning image. That image must be supplied to the calendar production team via a mailed CD, email, or FTP upload. Although not a requirement, we recommend that the image be embedded with IPTC copyright information as well as other important metadata.
Use the group discussion board to post questions about the contest. The discussion board will be checked at the discretion of the administrators, so if you have an important question don’t wait until the last minute to ask or it might go unanswered.
