Didn't see the compensation listed but did well with the exposure. Easy to over expose with the bg and harsh light .. meter wanting to open.

I like the pose with the raised foot, head angle is close and made a sharp image. Would have followed the bird if possible to see if it could be caught with its feathers raised or a more dramatic pose. Also waiting for he next step would have given you a clean bg of the two sticks ( assuming there were not more up ahead !!!)

Great to catch that golden slipper out of the water !

Agree a linear burn might improve. Softer or more diffused light conditions at capture may have helped.
If captured in RAW mode, might also try using recovery slider to tone down the highlights a bit.
Wish the bird or at least the head was angled a bit more toward the viewer.
