Straddling Oman, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Yemen, the Empty Quarter was made famous by the last of the great British explorers, Sir Wilfred Thesiger, who was also a respected photographer. He used a Leica and refused to use colour film even when it was available. I used a Canon 1Ds Mk II and preferred colour for this image.

Camera: Canon 1Ds Mk II.
Lens: Canon EF 28-70 mm 1:2.8L.
35mm, 1/25 sec, f22, ISO 100, mirror locked up.

Hi David,

I like the textures in the FG and the side-lighting brings that out well. As you move to the BG less texture is visible so it doesn't compete with the FG. The lines in the MG and BG dunes guide you around the image nicely. Colors and exposure look right on.

This is a work of art. Lovely composition, light and texture. You have a winner here!

I like this a lot. Great texture and sidelight in the foreground and the smooth-looking BG make this very special.

Great lines in this image, very well composed. I particularly the fading dunes on the right hand side of the frame, seems to give the sense that the dunes go on forever.
