Looks like congress wants to pass a federal statute regulating the volume of digital camera shutters on cam phones.

Will it be applied to P&S's too? I think these folks have too much time on their hands .... Frankly, I wish SLR's could be quieter.

Read the squib here (http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/117622).

Sorry for the double post, but I just heard more details on the proposal on the news. Apparently the congressman wants to make the shutters LOUDER so cell phone cameras will be less likely to be used for spying, voyeurism or child porn. So, this may not be a bad idea after all??

I just see it as a slippery slope. Parents should be watching their kids. Don't buy them phones with cameras.

I mean some P&S cameras are pretty small and also shoot video too. So do they then put a similar law for P&S?

It's a nanny state mentality ...

I think it is a nice try but still a bad idea for the reasons outlined by Michael. It will do nothing or next to nothing to stop the problem it attempts to solve--any noise making feature could be disabled.
