I'll have a few days by myself in Minnesota this July and I would like to photograph loons. I can bring my 500 mm with the TCs. Any suggestions on places to go? I won't have a boat, so I'll need to work off of land. I have been looking at the Itasca State Park State Park and Leech Lake areas. I'll be starting from the twin cities. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Andy

Unfortunately I don't have any suggestions for good locations. But, perhaps if you subscribe to the MN Bird mailing list (http://lists.mnbird.net/mailman/listinfo/mnbird/), some birders there can help you out. Also check out the Minnesota Camera Talk (http://www.cameratalk.org/mn/) forum. Good luck!

Hi Andrew. Without a boat, you will likely have difficulties getting close to the birds - unless you find some very cooperative birds. Itasca State Park may be a good place to check as there are a number of lakes there that have loons present. I believe you can also rent boats and canoes at Lake Itasca which would get you some closer opportunities. Good Luck.
