I am planning a trip to Chincoteage and Assateage Islands/ NWR on Dec. 20-21st. I am interested in seabirds as well as typical waterfowl and shorebirds. Anyone have any tips or hotspots that I should be sure to see? We might also check out the islands heading toward the Chesapeake Bay Tunnel.

Thanks,
Matt

Hi Matt,
I've been to Chincoteague NWR a few times. It has a pretty nice, though short, wildlife drive. One thing that's strange is that the drive is only open in the afternoon till sunset. I've had pretty good success there, but without the ability to shoot morning and evening it limits where you can shoot when it's sunny. There are other parts of the NWR that is open all day, and you can have some success in these areas. The Sitka deer are very plentiful and it's pretty easy to get shots of them. Not sure what's there this time of the year, as far as birds go, I usually go there in the spring. Happy Shooting!
