D300 200-400 + 1.7TC = 650mm, on tripod. Manual exposure mode. ISO 1600 f10 1/500sec. I used ISO 1600 because I wanted to stop down a bit but still got a decent shutter speed.

Heavily cropped for composition. Sharpened. Tweaked colors and contrast.

Shot this in Brackendale, BC, across the Squamish River. The eagle was too far away for my lens. I'd say it would still be too far with a 600 mm lens +TC if one wants to take portrait shots of the bald eagles, which can range from quite a few to many of them.

So mainly just want to share one of the shots with you guys. To me, this fellow looks like it was dancing but actually was hopping from one spot to the next on the same perch.

Background too noisy? But it tells a story :D

Thanks for looking !!

Hi Desmond - you need the Sigmonster with the converter - must be fantastic to see these guys in the wild.

Hi Desmond,
I like the up close capture, would have prefered a lower angle on the first post; but sometimes we get what we get... capturing eagles is always a treat...:)

I ran into a guy sometime ago. He told me he had been waiting for the 600 for eight months. He uses a D3 and he ended up buying a 200-400 while waiting for the 600.

When I was there, a guy with a Canon Mark something was using a 600 +1.4 TC. He let me take a look through the viewfinder. IMO, his combo - with a 1.3 crop factor - was still not long enough to get the entire eagle to fill the frame.

I like that pose, too, Harold. Kind of unusual.

We need to win not just any jackpot but a big jackpot :)

Thanks everybody and have a happy thanksgiving !!!
