Magnificent moment :) indeed. A s/h will probably work for the shadows of the mother's back plus I appreciate some extra space from the right, too.

Wonderful family portrait, and the two chicks are in great poses. I agree that a S/H adjustment will improve the detail on the mother's back. If you had lowered the camera to just below the knot on the trunk and a bit to the right, it would have placed the chicks in a rule of thirds position and would have give you a little more space behind the mother. A wonderful image though...I'd love to have it in my files!

Yes, moving the camera to the right and down would have given you a better compo, but the images is so full of emotion and the head angles are so good, that is just a minor nit.

The photograph was intended to be for a cover of wild bird but did not make it.

The reason for the the final composition was for the magazine to have head room and also room along the left side for text.
also it could not be cropped to those specs but rather they wanted that room in the raw file which is what you have here
